If you have tried bunion pads, then you know how disappointing they are since typically they don’t stay put, and do nothing for positioning the big toe in its natural alignment. If you have tried bunion splints, then you know firsthand the discomfort and pain that comes with wearing rigid splints, it is often worse than the bunions themselves! And what about those toe spacers for bunions? Those aren’t easily worn in shoes and most people find them terribly uncomfortable. What bunion treatments have you tried?

Does Dr. Oz Believe You Can Treat Bunions without Surgery?*
Dr. Oz thinks splint devices can often help to prevent bunions from getting worse. We all love Dr. Oz and trust his opinion but what does he say about the effectiveness of bunion products vs. surgery? On his show he discusses a variety of bunion splints, we trust you’ll find the best one for your foot and fit preference! Bunion Bootie is an around-the-clock bunion support splint for mild or moderate deformity due to bunions. It applies an evenly distributed, yet gentle pull on the big toe and temporarily brings it back to its anatomically correct position. Bunion Bootie provides immediate pain relief of your tense toes and bunion pain. The Bunion Bootie brace also provides a stable barrier to friction that also contributes to the discomfort we all experience with bunions that left untreated can result in swelling and bursitis near the big toe joint. Can Bunion Bootie Help You?
When used as directed, Bunion Booties may help anyone with bunion pain that have not yet reached an extreme stage of deformity. Created with the help of the medical community, Bunion Bootie is the first of its kind in bunion treatment today. Please visit our “Bunions“ page to view the various stages of deformity and accompanying bunion pictures to determine if Bunion Booties could help you, especially if you are seeking a non surgical treatment option for your bunions. Often times, without treatment, bunions can alter one’s gait and cause an increase in stress and weight on the big toe. The Bunion Bootie soft splint can relieve this stress and reduce the bunion pain associated with the swelling and friction from footwear. Additionally, by guiding and bracing the big toe back in its natural position you can begin to strengthen the tiny muscles of the toe required to maintain the proper position on its own, thereby reducing the pain of bunions in the long term. If nothing is done about the bunion and bunion pain, it’s likely to only worsen in time, typically leading bunion sufferers toward a very painful surgery and even more painful bunion surgery recovery experience. Many of those who use bunion correctors like the Bunion Bootie report an improvement to their condition.
If you want to read up further, check out some other articles such as this one at Buzzle.com, that support the use and effectiveness of bunion splints.
Then here at Foot.com, they also support the notion that you can prevent further progression of bunions by treating them with familiar at-home conservative options such as bunion night splints.
Can Surgery for Bunions be Avoided?
Most people consider bunion surgery for bunion treatment as a last resort due to the bunion surgery (bunionectomy) recovery time that can take anywhere from 3 (if you are lucky!) to 12 months. Most patients aren’t even able to drive a car for at least 2 months following bunion surgery. Other highly undesirable outcomes of bunion surgery include infections and nerve damage, a weakened big toe, pain transfered to other parts of the foot, and bunion surgery that has to be repeated because the condition returns. If you do have surgery but go back to your old ways and pointed shoes, it’s very likely the condition will reappear. Additionally, if you smoke, have diabetes, or are generally in poor health, surgery for bunions can pose additional health risks.
Since bunion surgery is usually only contemplated because the pain becomes unmanageable, most people are willing to try anything to help them reduce the pain. That’s where Bunion Bootie comes in. Bunion Bootie can help initially to prevent further irritation and rubbing against the bunion. This in turn will reduce the swelling often associated with bunions, the same swelling that can often lead to bursitis. Once the swelling and irritation is reduced the pain should be much more manageable if not gone altogether. Can Bunion Bootie Help with Your Bunion Pain?
Many medical professionals believe that inserts or orthotics can help prevent a bunion from worsening while others think that bunion splint devices can actually help your bunion pain. At the end of the day, 99% of people that undergo surgery to have their bunions removed do so because of the pain. A recent randomized study once performed in 4 Finland hospitals where the participants were divided into 3 equal groups, 1/3 had their bunion operated on, 1/3 used bunion correctors such as splint devices, and 1/3 remained as the control group. Here are a few points from their study; (the entire study can be found here.)
- Subjects eligible for the study: Those with a painful bunion with a hallux valgus angle <35 degrees and intermetatarsal angle of 15 degrees or less.
- Subjects excluded from the study: Those who have previously had bunion surgery, hallux ridigus (stiff big toe), hallux limitus (limited range of motion of the big toe), rheumatoid disease, pregnancy, >60 years of age.
- 6 months into the study, foot pain intensity was less in the bunion corrector group and surgical group.
- Overall, the bunion corrector group had higher global improvement, costs were obviously lower for treatment, and absence of work was the lowest than in the other two groups.
